Several states have banned the sale of 7-Hydroxymitragine. First lets take a look at what 7-Hydroxymitragine (7-OH) is.
7-Hydroxymitragine
7-OH is naturally occurring alkaloid found in the kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) plant. It is an active metabolite of mitragynine, the primary compound in kratom.
Key Characteristics of 7-Hydroxymitragine
More potent than Mitragyna speciosa
Deals with pain relief, sedation, and euphoria
Levels- 7-OH exists in kratom at very low levels (less than 0.05%), but it can be synthetically extracted or enhanced.
This last characteristic, that 7-OH in nature, the levels of 7-OH are very low. A lot of states are now trying to restrict this product because its synthesized and not naturally occuring.
State Bans
The following states have banned 7-Hydroxymitragine
Tennessee- The state bans synthetic derivatives but allows for natural kratom that contains natural levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine. Since kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) contains a very small amount of 7-oh it is legal but the extract or concentrated versions are illegal. This means that breaking this law is a class A misdemeanor. (Tennessee Code § 39-17-452)
Colorado- On May 30, 2025, Gov. Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 25-72 into law. This bill caps 7-hydroxy to 2% total content.
Georgia- As of 1/1/2025, the state of Georgia enacted the following Code § 16-13-122:
Kratom products must not contain more than 150 mg of mitragynine per serving and The concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine is limited to 0.5 mg per gram and no more than 1 mg per serving.
The sale of kratom products containing synthetic alkaloids, including synthetic mitragynine and synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine, is prohibited.
Kratom products intended for vaporization or use with electronic devices are banned
Nebraska- On May 15th 2025, Kratom Consumer Protection Act (LB230) was passed. This bill created certain regulations for Kratom such as minimum age (21), product standards, labeling requirements and more. The bill also sets the maximum allowed alkaloid content of 7-OH to 2% which means 7 hydroxy products are no longer legal.
South Carolina- South Carolina Passed the South Carolina Kratom Consumer Protection Act on 5/12/25. This law goes into effect 60 days after its signing. The law prohibits the preparation, sale, or distribution of any kratom product containing a 7-hydroxymitragynine concentration exceeding 2% of the total alkaloid content. while enacting protection measures for the consumer such as minimum buying age, clear product labeling and a ban on harmful substances to be added to kratom.
South Dakota- South Dakota enacted House Bill 1056 in February 2025. The law prohibits the preparation, sale, or distribution of any kratom product containing a 7-hydroxymitragynine concentration exceeding 2% of the total alkaloid content.
