On May 12, 2025 Governor of South Carolina signed the South Carolina Kratom Consumer Protection Act. The act aims at protecting consumers from harmful ingredients, establish a minimum buying age, establish clear labeling requirements and prevent minors from having easy access to the product.
While we agree and applaud SC for pushing through a bill that would enact stricter policy on kratom and prevent minors from getting access and the need for clear labeling is imperative. But the unintended consequences is the ban on 7-OH.
The act also targets 7-Hydroxy products, based on this new law, 7-hydroxy will no longer be legal in the state of South Carolina since the product is a derivative of kratom and not in its natural state, and the act itself specifies that the product cannot contain more than 2% 7-OH. This would make all 7-hydroxymitragynine products illegal since they are made of mostly 7-OH.
The law provides a 60 day grace period from when it was signed.
